The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Controller and Accountant General (CAGD) to withhold the July salaries of members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).
- The directive, issued on July 22, targets all teaching staff in the Colleges of Education, excluding College Principals.
- The move follows the Minister of Education’s directive in response to CETAG members’ refusal to end an illegal strike that began in June 2024.
- GTEC’s statement specifies that College Principals should not validate the July 2024 salaries of teaching staff.
On June 14, CETAG members initiated a strike demanding better working conditions and remuneration packages due to the government’s delay in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and negotiated service conditions.
- CETAG’s demands include:
- Payment of one month’s salary for additional duties performed in 2022.
- Application of agreed rates of allowances payable to public universities to CETAG members.
The strike has disrupted the academic calendar across all 46 public colleges of education, causing significant anxiety among students awaiting the resumption of classes.
- The NLC secured an interlocutory injunction to halt the strike, but CETAG continued despite a June 20 directive to end it.
- The Commission announced plans to sue the government to enforce the arbitral award in CETAG’s favor.
CETAG’s leadership held an emergency meeting on Monday to review strategies and determine the next steps as the strike enters its sixth week.
