Ofori-Ampofo: We Need to Revise SSNIT’s Structure to Better Serve Pensioners

Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, has advocated for a review of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) structure. Speaking on JoyNews’ National Dialogue on July 25, 2024, she expressed concerns about the effectiveness of SSNIT’s investments and their impact on workers.

Madam Ofori-Ampofo highlighted that some private pension schemes are outperforming SSNIT, noting that while private schemes hold assets around 38 billion cedis, SSNIT’s assets amount to 18 billion cedis. She described this disparity as indicative of a “fundamental issue” that requires attention.

“As nurses and midwives, pensions are crucial to us. Observing SSNIT’s operations and performance raises significant concerns and worries,” she said.

She urged all workers, in both private and public sectors, to take their pensions seriously, underscoring SSNIT’s vital role in ensuring their future security.

“By the time you retire, your energy will wane, and you may face various health challenges. Therefore, it is essential to address our pension issues properly,” she added.
