Dr. Kwabena Nyarko-Otoo, Director of Research and Policy at the Trades Union Congress, has highlighted severe issues in the management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). He attributes the current challenges to significant managerial flaws within SSNIT, which have impeded the pension scheme’s ability to adequately pay pensioners.

In a discussion on JoyNews’ National Dialogue on Pension Reforms on July 25, Dr. Nyarko-Otoo criticized SSNIT’s management structure, noting that its poor decision-making has negatively impacted the fund’s performance.

He cited the recent controversy surrounding SSNIT’s attempt to sell 60% of its shares in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel as an example of these management issues.

“There are serious problems with pension management in Ghana. Much of this stems from the reforms we implemented and SSNIT’s management of pension resources, which has been inadequate,” Dr. Nyarko-Otoo stated.

He concluded that recent developments concerning SSNIT underscore the gravity of the pension fund management problem in the country.

Key Points:

  • Management Flaws: Dr. Nyarko-Otoo attributes SSNIT’s challenges to serious managerial problems.
  • Inadequate Payments: The pension scheme’s issues have led to difficulties in paying pensioners their due wages.
  • Poor Decisions: Recent decisions, such as the attempted sale of hotel stakes, illustrate SSNIT’s management problems.
  • Reform Critique: He criticized both past reforms and SSNIT’s handling of pension resources.
  • Severity of the Issue: The ongoing issues with SSNIT highlight the seriousness of pension fund management problems in Ghana.
