Former President John Mahama has pledged to recover any misused public funds associated with the construction of the National Cathedral should he return to office. Speaking at a media encounter on Sunday, July 7th, 2024, Mahama criticized the alleged misappropriation of public funds under the guise of building a religious monument.
“While supporting the construction of a house of God is commendable, I strongly oppose any misappropriation of public funds in its name,” Mahama remarked. “This situation is exactly what has transpired with the National Cathedral.”
Mahama acknowledged that some members of the Board of Trustees had resigned and advocated for a forensic audit of the project. “There is a demand for a forensic audit because this project was originally pledged as a personal commitment to God, assuring that no public funds would be utilized. However, it has come to light that public funds have indeed been expended,” he explained.
He stressed the importance of accountability and transparency, asserting that those responsible for any financial improprieties must face consequences. “These issues must be thoroughly investigated, and a forensic audit must be conducted. Any misappropriated funds must be recovered,” Mahama emphasized.
As Ghana prepares for the upcoming December 7 general elections, Mahama’s stance on scrutinizing the National Cathedral project underscores his dedication to fiscal responsibility and efforts against corruption.
