In response to a series of recent fire incidents causing significant loss of life and property, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urgently appealed to the public for assistance in acquiring life-saving tools. They stressed the importance of proactive fire safety measures and highlighted that they cannot fully carry out their mandate without the necessary equipment.

In a post on X, the GNFS pointed out that government efforts alone are not enough without the support of citizens, prompting their call for help. They asked, “Who will be kind enough to buy some of these life-saving tools to enable us to save more lives in Ghana?” The GNFS underscored the crucial need for households and businesses to have basic fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and fire blankets.

Recent months have witnessed a concerning rise in fire outbreaks across Ghana, especially in residential areas and markets. The GNFS attributed the high incidence of fires to a lack of preparedness and inadequate fire safety measures. Many homes and commercial establishments do not have even the most basic firefighting tools, making it difficult to control fires when they break out.

The GNFS is also calling on the government to provide subsidies for fire safety equipment to make these tools more affordable for the average Ghanaian. They believe that such measures will encourage more people to invest in essential fire safety tools.
