Haruna Iddrisu Warns AG: Appealing Ato Forson’s Trial Ruling Will Lead to Disgrace

Haruna Iddrisu MP For Tamale South

The MP for Tamale South has intimated that the Attorney General stands to suffer a further disgrace if he goes ahead to appeal the recent decision. Haruna Iddrisu said, “I hear the Attorney General, instead of swallowing his humble pride, is saying that he wants to litigate on this matter. We promise him that he will be even more disgraced because this is a matter, if you want to try people, try them on matters which are legally meritorious.”

The Court of Appeal recently ruled that the order of the trial court for Dr. Ato Forson to open his defense in the protracted case of ambulance procurement be set aside. The “ambulance scandal,” as the case has popularly become known, dates back to 2015 when the Ministry of Health, under then Health Minister Alex Segbefia, set out to acquire 200 ambulances to enhance emergency medical services across the country. Dr. Forson was then the Deputy Minister of Finance and was alleged to have made payments for the supply of purportedly inferior ambulances.

The Attorney General said he would appeal the decision of the court. The Deputy Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, told the media, “The Office of the Attorney-General considers the decision of the Court of Appeal grossly unfair to the nation and inimical to the fight against impunity and abuse in public office.” According to him, the Office would swiftly appeal in order to “erase the effect of this erroneous decision of the Court of Appeal.”

The trial that started in 2019 witnessed lots of witnesses giving their testimonies; experts also mounted the witness box to give their analysis on the procurement process and the condition of the ambulances delivered.
