The Ghana Education Service (GES) has distributed more than 6.6 million sanitary pads to girls in schools across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The move forms part of government’s initiative to enhance menstrual hygiene management and reduce absenteeism among schoolgirls due to menstrual-related challenges.

The announcement, made in a statement on Saturday, October 11, coincided with the International Day of the Girl Child, marked globally under the theme:

“The Girl I am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of the Crisis.”

Empowering Girls Through Education and Dignity

The GES said the intervention reflects government’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive education, adding that menstrual health remains a critical factor in girls’ academic participation and confidence.

“This initiative is in fulfilment of the Government of Ghana’s promise to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, from basic to second cycle levels, on a monthly basis throughout their school life,”
the statement said.

The programme aims to support the welfare and dignity of adolescent girls while tackling socio-cultural barriers that hinder girls’ education and participation.

Commitment to Equal Education

GES reaffirmed its dedication to building a fair and inclusive education system that prioritizes the needs of all learners, especially girls in underserved communities.

It expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for operationalizing the initiative, describing it as a “life-changing intervention” that will help girls stay focused on their studies and maximize their educational opportunities.

“We remain committed to advancing gender parity and creating an environment where every girl can learn, lead, and thrive,”
the statement concluded.
