The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has declared his intention to amend laws to halt the rampant illegal mining in forest reserves if elected into office. He expressed concern over the encroachment of forest reserves by illegal mining activities, which have led to water contamination and adverse effects on crop production.
During a media engagement on July 7th, Mahama emphasized his firm stance on banning mining in forest reserves, describing it as a non-negotiable decision. “We will amend the law that currently permits mining in forest reserves to put an end to this practice,” he asserted.
Mahama also highlighted the alarming involvement of government officials in illegal mining operations and pledged stringent measures under his administration to prevent such misconduct. He stressed the environmental impact of illegal mining, noting the observable changes in climate patterns affecting Ghana.
“We must protect our forest zones to prevent them from turning into savannahs. Preserving and replenishing our forest reserves is crucial,” Mahama added.
Additionally, Mahama outlined plans to establish district offices for agencies overseeing the mining sector in gold mining districts. These offices, including those of the Minerals Commission, will enhance enforcement and compliance with mining regulations.
In a bold statement, Mahama vowed to hold top politicians accountable for their involvement in illegal mining activities, proposing amnesty for those convicted of galamsey who are not the main perpetrators. “If imprisonment is necessary, it should be for District Chief Executives and ministers involved in galamsey, not just their employees,” he asserted.
Mahama’s comprehensive approach underscores his commitment to environmental conservation and governance reform in the mining sector, aiming to address the pervasive challenges posed by illegal mining in Ghana.
