Former BBC Deputy Editor Ben Dotsei Malor has voiced grave concerns about the devastating impact of illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, on Ghana’s environment and people.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, October 16, Malor described the severe consequences of this unlawful activity, which he believes is inflicting lasting harm on the nation.

“Galamsey is destroying us,” he lamented, recounting a troubling story from a town in the Central Region.

Malor shared a shocking video he had seen, depicting a massive pit left by galamsey operators, with newly built houses nearby. “This is the foolishness,” he said. “They make money from the gold, build these houses, and leave dangerous holes where any child could fall and die. They’re even digging under the main road.”

He criticized the short-sightedness that drives people to engage in such activities, warning that these actions sacrifice the future for short-term gains.

Malor called for national unity in addressing the issue and stressed the importance of avoiding political divides. He underscored that the fight against galamsey is a matter of patriotism and should not be politicized. “Anybody who makes this a partisan issue needs to have their head examined,” he stated.
