After a three-year trial, the High Court has found two teenagers guilty of the brutal murder of 10-year-old Ishmael Abdallah in Kasoa, a case that sent shockwaves across Ghana when it occurred in 2021.

Nicholas Kini, who was 18 at the time of the crime, has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killing. The first accused, a 15-year-old at the time of the incident, will face sentencing in a juvenile court due to his minor status.

The crime stemmed from a misguided attempt at ritual sacrifice in a bid to acquire wealth. Investigations revealed that the first accused had been influenced by a spiritualist’s video, which falsely promised riches in exchange for GH¢5,000 and human blood. The teenager admitted to planning the murder, enlisting Kini to help him carry out the heinous act.

The two teens lured Ishmael Abdallah to an uncompleted building under the guise of offering him a video game. There, they struck him with a stick and crushed his head with cement blocks before burying him alive. A pathologist later confirmed that the young boy died from asphyxiation.

Throughout the trial, seven witnesses, including family members and law enforcement, testified, painting a harrowing picture of the events. The father of the first accused, Richard Mensah, testified that his son had confessed to the crime, implicating Nicholas Kini. The deceased’s father also gave a moving account of the moment he discovered his son’s lifeless body.

The jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict, finding both teenagers guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, in her final remarks, reminded the jury of their duty to reflect the conscience of the nation in their decision.

The sentencing brings some closure to the family of the deceased, though the trauma of the tragic event continues to linger.
