Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah, reportedly drew a firearm in self-defense after being confronted by some youth brandishing toy guns at Atasemanso.

The incident occurred during a gathering where constituents were demanding updates on the construction of an Astroturf pitch promised by the MP. According to Luv FM sources, some of the youth, including party supporters, brought toy guns to the campaign grounds, firing them into the air amid cheers.

During the confrontation, one of the youth allegedly brandished a toy gun in close proximity to Dr. Amoah. Jimmy Boakye Ansah, spokesperson for the NPP in the Nhyiaeso Constituency, explained that the MP reacted instinctively to defend himself.

“The MP was caught off guard. They had a cordial discussion, and he even offered them some money. However, one individual pulled the toy gun without Dr. Amoah noticing initially,” he clarified.

The trend of brandishing toy guns has gained popularity in Kumasi, particularly among the youth, who often use them for recreational purposes. However, the Ghana Police Service has raised concerns about this behavior, labeling it a potential threat to public peace.

In a recent statement, the police warned against the misuse of toy guns, emphasizing that it constitutes “offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace,” as outlined in Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). This warning followed the arrest of 26 individuals for indiscriminately firing toy guns in public spaces.

The police have urged the public, particularly the youth, to refrain from such actions to maintain law and order.
