Officials from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have begun a sweeping enforcement campaign targeting commercial drivers who are refusing to comply with a nationwide directive to reduce transport fares.

The crackdown comes in response to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) recent mandate requiring a 15% reduction in fares, which officially took effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

The fare cut was prompted by a notable decrease in fuel prices and a consistent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollar—developments aimed at easing the financial burden on commuters.

Despite the directive, many drivers in the Kumasi metropolis have reportedly continued to charge the old fares, prompting complaints from passengers and civil society groups. In response, KMA task forces have begun arresting non-compliant drivers at major transport terminals and roadside stops.

Videos from the operation show KMA officers engaging with drivers and, in some cases, ordering them out of their vehicles before making arrests.

KMA authorities have stated that the exercise will continue until full compliance is achieved and have urged drivers to respect the directive in the interest of public welfare.

Meanwhile, transport unions are calling for calm and encouraging their members to follow the fare guidelines to avoid legal consequences.
