Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has handed over three new buses to the Ghana Prisons Service to boost transportation efficiency for inmates and staff across the country. The initiative aims to enhance safety, dignity, and rehabilitation within Ghana’s correctional facilities.

The Minister presented a Toyota Coaster, a Hyundai County, and an Ashok Leyland bus during a brief ceremony in Accra.

The donation was made possible through the National Security Secretariat, which provided one bus, and Maripoma Company Limited, which contributed two.

Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak said the gesture represented more than logistics support — it was a reflection of government’s commitment to reforming and modernizing Ghana’s correctional system.

“These buses are instruments of efficiency, safety, and dignity,”
he stated, reaffirming the Mahama administration’s GH₵1 billion retooling pledge for the security and corrections sector.

Ghana Prisons Service Commends Government Support

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), expressed gratitude to the Minister and the donors, describing the gesture as “an investment in human dignity.”

“Hon. Muntaka has shown himself to be a true advocate and champion for the Ghana Prisons Service, giving us confidence and stability to stand on our feet,” she said.

She added that the new buses would improve inmate mobility for court appearances, hospital transfers, and educational or rehabilitation programs.

The donation forms part of a broader effort to modernize Ghana’s prison system, improve welfare conditions, and promote a shift from punitive detention to rehabilitation and reintegration.
