Nana Ohene Ntow, a prominent member of the Movement for Change, has criticized the Ministry of Trade’s decision to control cement prices, calling it misguided.
He argued that the most effective way to manage cement and other commodity prices is by addressing inflation and the depreciation of the cedi.
“I agree with some level of control. But the decision to implement a Legislative Instrument (L.I) to regulate cement prices is like prescribing paracetamol for a headache when surgery is needed to address the root cause,” he stated on the July 6 episode of Key Points.
The Ministry of Trade has introduced a Legislative Instrument to control cement prices, a move that has been met with opposition from the Cement Manufacturers Association.
On the same program, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu suggested mediation as the way forward.
“A mediator is needed to help both sides address their concerns. When two elephants fight, it is the ground that suffers. They should get a mediator like Austin Gamey or Nana SKB Asante to facilitate discussions,” Kpebu said.
