A wreath-laying ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Asomdwe Park in Accra to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills.
The event saw the attendance of prominent figures including National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama, his running mate Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, and several Members of Parliament. Also present were NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage Board Chairman and CEO Alex Segbefia, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, former Minister for Information Kofi Totobi Quakyi, General Secretary of the NDC Fiifi Fiavi Kwettey, former Director of Elections of the NDC Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, MP for Korle Klottey Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and Samuel Kofi Atta Mills, the son of the late President, among other NDC stalwarts.
During the ceremony, six wreaths were laid. Kofi Attoh, the Speaker’s Aide, laid the first wreath on behalf of Parliament and MPs. Subsequent wreaths were laid by Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, MP for Krowor, on behalf of the widow Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills; John Mahama with Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman; the Atta Mills family; Johnson Asiedu Nketia on behalf of the NDC party; and members of the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage (JEAMMH).
In his tribute, John Mahama praised President Mills for his integrity and humility. “He lived a life marked by selflessness and devotion to Ghana,” Mahama said. He highlighted Mills’ dedication to the nation, noting that the late President was known for prioritizing the country’s needs over personal or political gain. Mahama recalled that Mills was the first to voluntarily cut his own salary to demonstrate solidarity with Ghanaians during economic difficulties, contrasting this selfless act with current political practices.
