Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has rejected claims that he failed in his role as the chair of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

He believes the perception of his failure stems from a misunderstanding of his responsibilities. His remarks follow criticisms that illegal mining continued unabated during his tenure.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on July 24, he clarified, “My job was to bring the issue to the leadership’s attention. I regularly reported to the president, highlighting various concerns.”

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng noted that one of his key achievements was alerting the president to the Forest Commission’s practice of allocating forest reserves for mining activities.

He stressed that he made significant strides, including producing a comprehensive report that resulted in legal challenges from certain individuals who accused him of defamation.

In response to suggestions that he failed due to ongoing river pollution, he argued, “I didn’t fail, no.” He further explained that if individuals reoffend after serving sentences, it shouldn’t be seen as a failure on his part.
