Edudzi Tamekloe: AG Dame Unfit to Address This Year's Bar Association Meeting

According to the counsel for the defendants in the ambulance case, Godwin Edudzi Tamekloe, the Attorney General is not deserving to deliver an address to lawyers at this year’s Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference.

“I have unwavering belief in his innocence,” he said of his client Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at a press conference called to hit back at the AG over her fitness to speak at the event.

“From his statement, he has shown that he is not fit and proper to address the Bar at this year’s Conference,” Mr. Tamekloe said on JoyNews’ PM Express.

Calling for the ousting of Mr. Yeboah Dame, he said the GBA PRO, Savior Kudze’s bashing of the comments of the AG after the judgment smacks of giving him the free rein of addressing lawyers when it’s time to serve at the conference.

Mr. Tamekloe accused the AG of persecuting Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who is the Minority Leader in Parliament.

He remembered how the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) even first instructed them to take the police statement home and return with it completed, signaling there was no wrongdoing from the word go.

The learned lawyer said the reason for the attacks and persecution of Dr. Ato Forson was based on his stand against the government’s Electronic Levy Bill in 2019. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in a two to one majority judgment acquitted and discharged Dr. Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa in the ambulance case.

This overturned a High Court ruling, which had previously ordered them to present a defense over allegations of causing a financial loss amounting to €2.37 million to the state in the procurement of ambulances for the government.

While Justice Alex Poku Acheampong dissented, Justices Kweku Tawiah Ackah-Boafo and Philip Bright Mensah ruled in favor of the accused.

Subsequently, the AG, Godfred Dame, issued a statement describing the decision as perverse and in opposition to the vast evidence adduced by the prosecution.

He argued that the decision undermines the public’s accountability and rule of law.

Mr. Tamekloe stated that he remains optimistic that Dr. Ato Forson would be ultimately vindicated, notwithstanding the AG’s intention to appeal the ruling.

“I have always believed in the innocence of my client and can say that whether Supreme Court or Antoa or Nogokpo, my client will be vindicated,” he said.

Mr. Tamekloe feels the AG is not competent enough to speak at the GBA conference.

He is absolutely sure about the innocence of Dr. Ato Forson.

The criticism of the AG toward the statement by the GBA PRO gave more weight to the argument of Mr. Tamekloe.

He accused the AG of persecuting Dr. Ato Forson for purely political reasons. The Court of Appeal recently quashed the acquittal and discharge of Dr. Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa. AG Godfred Dame slammed the decision by the Court of Appeal. Mr. Tamekloe is confident in Dr. Ato Forson’s ultimate vindication.
