A resident of Amenfi Central in the Western Region, Gyedu Frimpong, has formally petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to disqualify Joana Cudjoe Gyan, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, from the upcoming parliamentary race.
The petition was prompted by a High Court injunction in Takoradi, which prevents the EC from accepting Mrs. Gyan’s nomination. The court order remains active and has not been overturned.
The petition states, “Given the High Court’s injunction in Suit Number E112/36/24, involving Gyedu Frimpong and others v. Joana Cudjoe Gyan and others, any acceptance of Mrs. Gyan’s nomination form by the EC would be in clear violation of the court’s directive, constituting contempt in the ongoing case.”
Key Points of the Petition
The petition recounts that Mrs. Cudjoe Gyan participated in the NDC parliamentary primaries for the Amenfi Central constituency. A critical requirement for eligibility in the primaries was possession of a valid national voter identification card.
“Mrs. Cudjoe was required to provide her voter ID number on the Amenfi Constituency nomination forms and submit a copy to regional executives,” the petition explains.
However, the document highlights a discrepancy: the voter ID number Mrs. Cudjoe submitted consisted of 11 digits, while the standard format for a valid voter ID card is 10 digits, as stipulated under the Public Elections Regulations.
Additionally, the petition alleges that Mrs. Cudjoe used two different voter ID numbers on the forms she completed—67610125841 and 67610125891. It claims that the voter ID number she presented actually belongs to Seidu Bala (6761012589), and that the extra digit (1) was fraudulently added.
The petition concludes by referencing findings from investigations conducted by the Amenfi and Bantama NDC constituencies, which, along with supporting documentation, indicate that Mrs. Cudjoe’s voter ID is invalid, rendering her ineligible to participate in the NDC primaries.
