Arsenal returned to winning form in the Champions League with a resounding victory over Sporting at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, delivering a dominant performance from start to finish.

Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring early, tapping in from Jurrien Timber’s low cross. Moments later, Bukayo Saka broke through Sporting’s defense and set up Kai Havertz for a close-range finish to double the lead.

The Gunners added a third just before halftime, with Gabriel Magalhães powering home a header from a Declan Rice corner—his first Champions League goal.

Sporting briefly fought back after the break, with Gonçalo Inácio scoring a smart left-footed strike, but it proved to be merely a consolation.

Ousmane Diomande narrowly avoided a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Martin Ødegaard, conceding a penalty in the process. Saka stepped up and coolly slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Arsenal rounded off their impressive display with a fifth goal when Franco Israel parried a fierce shot from Mikel Merino into the path of Leandro Trossard, who headed into an empty net.

Arsenal’s Statement Win

Manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the need to make a statement, and his team delivered in emphatic fashion. Martinelli’s goal, timed at 6 minutes 43 seconds, was Arsenal’s fastest Champions League goal since Theo Walcott’s against Basel in 2016 (6:42).

Bukayo Saka was a standout performer, notching an assist and scoring a penalty to take his Champions League tally to 11 goal involvements (six goals, five assists).

This marks only the second time Arsenal have scored three first-half goals in an away Champions League match, the first being against Galatasaray in 2014.

The victory also ended Arsenal’s five-match winless streak in Champions League away games (two draws, three losses), showcasing their dominance from the first whistle.

Arteta capitalized on the comfortable lead to rest key players, including Rice, Martinelli, and Ødegaard, as Arsenal cruised to a commanding victory on the road. The Gunners’ fast start and clinical finishing underscored their intent to be a formidable force in this season’s competition.
