The Amasaman Circuit Court has granted bail to a 21-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Hope Nunekpeku, accused of attempted robbery and preparation to commit a crime. Nunekpeku, who has pleaded not guilty to both charges, was released on a GH₵50,000 bail with two sureties. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 6, 2025.

Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, identified only as Dickson, remains at large.

Incident Details

According to Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, the complainant, a driver residing in Opah, had parked his Sprinter Benz bus by the roadside at Shikpontele around 9:30 PM on December 4, 2023. He was waiting to hand over money and provisions to his wife when he noticed a motorbike approaching the driver’s side of his vehicle.

Both individuals on the motorbike were seen peering into the vehicle, raising the complainant’s suspicions. He questioned them, after which the motorbike moved ahead and parked in front of his vehicle. Shortly after, the complainant’s wife joined him inside the bus, and the couple continued observing the motorbike riders.

Chief Inspector Nashiru stated that Nunekpeku, who was seated as the pillion rider, was seen removing an object from his clothing, prompting the complainant to drive his vehicle towards the motorbike. The suspects then fled into the darkness.

The complainant immediately alerted a police motorbike patrol team in the area. The team tracked down and arrested Nunekpeku, who had a machete hidden in his T-shirt. However, Dickson, the alleged accomplice, managed to escape.

Legal Proceedings

The complainant identified Nunekpeku as the pillion rider involved in the incident. During his cautioned statement, Nunekpeku confirmed Dickson’s involvement but did not provide further assistance to locate him. Following investigations, Nunekpeku was formally charged.

The court proceedings, presided over by Ms. Anid Marful-Sau, will continue as the search for Dickson and further investigations progress.
