In the aftermath of the devastating fire that gutted the Adum Bluelight Market in Kumasi, traders are struggling to recover, citing a lack of government support. In response, the Amansie Rural Bank PLC has stepped in to assist, donating 100 bags of cement to support the ongoing reconstruction efforts.

Chairman of the United Traders Association, Joseph Bobie Ansah, revealed that despite the severity of the disaster, the government has not yet offered tangible support for rebuilding the market. As a result, traders have taken it upon themselves to begin reconstruction.

“We will do it ourselves because we can’t wait for the government. There are too many markets left incomplete already. Now that we have clearance, we’ll rebuild it ourselves,” he said.

He also assured traders that all original shop owners will reclaim their spaces once the market is rebuilt. “No new buyers will be allowed. The space is reserved for the original traders,” Mr. Ansah emphasized.

Amansie Rural Bank’s donation is part of its broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Acting Head of Business Development and Relationship Banking, Anna Adu-Gyamfi, said the support aligns with the bank’s mission to stand by clients during crises.

“This is not a one-time act—we’ll continue to support our community because it’s part of who we are,” she noted. She also encouraged traders and the public to consider banking with Amansie, highlighting the bank’s reliable customer service and commitment to community welfare.

Kwame Wiredu, one of the affected traders and a beneficiary of the bank’s intervention, shared how the bank contacted him after the fire to assess the damage.

“They reached out to me for details and offered support even though I have an outstanding loan with them. That meant a lot,” he said. He urged others to choose banks that stand by their customers in difficult times.

Despite the difficult conditions, a strong sense of unity and resilience among the traders is driving the reconstruction effort forward, with hopes of restoring the Adum Bluelight Market to its former vibrancy.
