The chief of Banka, a rural community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality, has been sentenced to three months in prison by an Accra High Court for embezzling $150,000 intended for local development. The funds, donated by Gold Coast Company in 2010, were meant to improve infrastructure in the underdeveloped area, which lacks basic amenities like toilet facilities.
The 65-year-old chief, Nana Twiampomah III, also known as Frederick Kofi Frimpong, misappropriated the funds and failed to provide the promised development for his community.
On Tuesday, July 23, Judge Comfort K. Tasiame delivered the verdict, noting that the sentence was moderated due to the chief’s advanced age. Along with the three-month prison term, the chief was fined 2,000 penalty units, with an additional five years imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
Residents of Banka who attended the court proceedings expressed relief at the verdict. They criticized the chief for his actions, highlighting the severe lack of even basic facilities in their community due to his misconduct.
