The government has finalized plans to reintroduce road tolls in 2025. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced this during the presentation of the mid-year fiscal policy review for 2024 in Parliament on Tuesday, July 23.
On November 18, 2021, former Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, directed that toll collection at various tollbooths across the country be halted. This decision followed the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s announcement during the 2022 budget presentation that road tolls had been abolished.
However, the government has reversed its stance and authorized the development of a framework to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025.
“Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also granted approval for the disbursement of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to settle outstanding claims relating to the financial management companies; the establishment of a framework for the re-introduction of Road and Bridge Tolls in 2025,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.
He also mentioned that the government has approved “the operationalization of the integrated property tax system and the amendment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act to reinstate the numeric threshold that was suspended in 2020.”
