Independent presidential candidate Nana Kwame Bediako has promised to address Ghana’s healthcare brain drain by creating opportunities for health professionals through an ambitious industrialization agenda and reforms to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
Speaking to students at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Hohoe, Volta Region, Bediako outlined plans to improve job prospects and salaries for nurses, midwives, and other healthcare workers.
Vision for Healthcare Transformation
Bediako encouraged the trainees to excel in their studies, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s healthcare system.
“I want you to become great leaders of this country so that we will no longer seek health aid from other nations but build world-class hospitals here in Ghana,” he said.
He also urged them to remain in the country and contribute to its development, addressing the troubling trend of mass migration among healthcare workers. Recent reports indicate that 6,000 nurses have left Ghana in search of better opportunities abroad, citing poor salaries and inadequate working conditions as major reasons for their departure.
Policy Proposals
Bediako attributed the healthcare sector’s challenges to a lack of effective retention policies and pledged to make Ghana an attractive destination for professionals under his leadership.
“I want to advocate for you, especially the women,” Bediako declared. “I want you to become entrepreneurs and leaders, not just wives or people who cook for us. I want you to share positions with us and help drive the change this country needs.”
Call for Support
In his concluding remarks, Bediako appealed to nursing trainees to support his bid in the upcoming elections, assuring them that their aspirations would be prioritized.
“If elected, I will work tirelessly to address the challenges in the healthcare sector and create an environment where you can thrive,” he promised.
Bediako’s commitment to ending the brain drain and empowering healthcare workers has resonated with many, positioning him as a candidate focused on transformative policies for the sector.
