The Accra Rotary Club recently visited the 17 Army Signal Brigade at Burma Camp in Accra as part of their initiative to build stronger societal connections. Former Rotary International Director Sam Okudzeto explained that these visits are crucial for the club to better understand various organizations and institutions.
The Rotary Club’s mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance global understanding, goodwill, and peace.
Since 2018, the Ghana Army has collaborated with Soko Aerial to enhance their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) capabilities, aiming to boost their aerial operational efficiency. Soko Aerial, a local company specializing in drone technology, has trained hundreds of army officers in drone operations.
Brigadier General Anthony Ntem welcomed the Rotary Club representatives and highlighted the army’s commitment to integrating UAV technology in military operations. He emphasized that the 42 Independent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron, part of the 17 Army Signal Brigade, and Soko Aerial are focused on developing UAVs for reconnaissance, surveillance, and other critical tasks.
Despite advancements, securing funding for the UAV project remains a challenge due to its innovative nature. Kofi Owusu-Adusei, Founder of Soko Aerial Robotics and Director of the Ghana Armed Forces Drone Project, noted that many businesses and corporations do not consider the defense sector in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“A lot of times, organizations don’t support military research and innovations. Many CSR efforts focus elsewhere, leaving a gap in defense sector funding,” he said.
The visit also featured an exhibition where UAVs and information and communication systems developed under the project were demonstrated.
