Six individuals have sustained serious injuries from cutlass wounds after violent clashes broke out in Abetifi, located in the Kwawu Municipality of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The unrest began when unknown armed men allegedly abducted Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, the Acting Kwawuhene and Abetifihene, on Thursday. Attempting to prevent the suspects from escaping the town, an outraged group of residents blocked the roads.
According to reports from Adom News, Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, who claims the title of Abrewatia of Kwawu, is believed to have brought the armed men to Abetifi. Initially, locals assumed the men were National Security operatives due to their escort of Yaa Asantewaa to the Abetifi Palace, where they held Asiedu Agyemang III.
The situation escalated as Yaa Asantewaa and her group moved Akyemfour Agyemang III to an old palace. There, she performed traditional destoolment rites, including a ritual sacrifice of a sheep, with the apparent intention of dethroning him.
Police have since made several arrests in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
