President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the Ghana Police Service to reassess its operational strategies to prevent extended episodes of violence following elections.

This appeal comes in the wake of reports of unrest after the 2024 general elections, including vandalism of public property and offices of the Electoral Commission. The incidents have been attributed to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary launch at the Osu Castle on Sunday, December 22, 2024, President Akufo-Addo voiced his concerns about the negative implications of such violence on Ghana’s democratic reputation.

He urged the police to adopt improved approaches to swiftly address tensions arising after elections.

“I commend the security services, especially the police, for their effective monitoring of the elections, which contributed to their peaceful conduct. However, I urge the police leadership to review strategies that allow post-electoral violence to persist for too long before being contained,” he stated.

The President also highlighted the shared responsibility of all Ghanaians to safeguard the nation’s peace and democratic stability, stressing that unity and order are essential for Ghana’s progress.
