Former Defence Minister and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, has disclosed that 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have officially thrown their support behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Nitiwul revealed that the MPs had invited Dr. Bawumia to a meeting on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to reaffirm their belief in his leadership potential.

“Yes, I was actually part of the MPs who have been holding regular meetings,” Nitiwul confirmed.
“Two weeks ago, we met in Dr. Bawumia’s office to pledge our support. Today, we invited him again to formally tell him that we believe he is the right person to lead us into the 2028 elections.”

He noted that the number of MPs supporting Bawumia had increased from 42 to 60, with expectations that more would join in the coming weeks.

Not a One-Sided Race

Addressing concerns about fairness and internal competition, Mr. Nitiwul emphasized that not all MPs are aligned with Dr. Bawumia.

“There are about 28 MPs who didn’t attend—not because they dislike him, but because they support other candidates, including some MPs who intend to run themselves.”

He acknowledged the presence of other credible contenders and party dynamics, stating that Bawumia is not expected to receive 100% backing.

“We know he won’t get everyone. But we are saying that among us, he’s the best choice, and we are taking this one step at a time.”

Growing Support Within the Caucus

Mr. Nitiwul highlighted the political weight of such growing support from within Parliament:

“If three-quarters of the people’s representatives are backing you, that’s a strong signal—you already have one leg on the path to victory.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Ghana’s Vice President from 2017 to 2025, is considered a frontrunner in the NPP’s upcoming 2026 presidential primaries. His supporters argue that he is well-positioned to unite the party and lead a strong campaign ahead of the 2028 general elections.
