NDC 2024 Campaign has warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about removing and blocking billboards of their leader, John Dramani Mahama, and their parliamentary candidates.
They claimed that the Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) took down a billboard of Mr. Mahama put up by Alliance Media in Tema.
In a statement on Friday, July 19, the Mahama 2024 Campaign said, “This act is unacceptable and is a needless, provocative attempt to increase political tensions in the country.”
They explained that Alliance Media, a registered Ghanaian advertising company, has the legal right to put up billboards and pays the necessary fees to the TMA and other assemblies. Therefore, it is wrong for the TMA chief executive to remove their billboard, which the Mahama Campaign had rented and paid for.
The campaign team expected Alliance Media to take legal action against the TMA. They also warned the TMA boss and NPP that such actions, which provoke political clashes and violence, harm the growth of democracy.
They noted a similar incident in the Ablekuma North constituency, where the NPP blocked a billboard of the NDC parliamentary candidate. They emphasized that organizations like the National Peace Council and other groups are watching these provocations.
The Mahama 2024 Campaign stated that such acts will no longer be tolerated. If they continue, they will instruct their members to take necessary measures to prevent such acts across the country.
They urged the NPP to campaign peacefully and respect the rights of others to advertise their political candidates and messages. Violence and destruction of property should not be part of political discourse. President Mahama emphasized the need for “peace and decorum in our political discourse, especially as we approach the high-stakes elections in December.”
