Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, shared heartfelt memories of his interactions with the late President John Evans Atta Mills during the 12th anniversary of Prof. Mills’ death at the University of Ghana, Legon.

In 2008, Pratt recalled asking Prof. Mills if he was healthy enough to run for president. Prof. Mills admitted he was facing health issues but was hopeful after a medical checkup in South Africa.

“Professor Mills acknowledged his health problems but said the doctors in South Africa assured him he would be fine. I left feeling reassured that he was ready for the upcoming election and the challenges ahead,” Pratt said on July 19.

Pratt also remembered a visit to the Freedom Center, where he saw Prof. Mills attend an event despite having serious vision problems. After the event, Pratt asked the President if he was able to continue.

“Prof. Can you make it?” Pratt inquired.

Prof. Mills responded with determination: “I will use every last bit of my strength to serve the people. I can’t give up now. The country needs me, and I am committed to making the sacrifices necessary to help.”

Prof. Mills became President of Ghana in 2009 after winning the December 2008 election. He passed away on July 24, 2012, a few months before the next election. His Vice-President, John Mahama, took over and later won the 2012 elections for the NDC.
