Bentil supports Dr. Bawumia but emphasizes that his victory must be fair. “Everyone knows where I stand, but if Dr. Bawumia is going to win this election, let him win it fair and square,” he said on Joy FM’s Newsfile on Saturday.

His remarks came after President Akufo-Addo appointed Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations. This move has led some Ghanaians to suspect an attempt to undermine IGP Dr. George Dampare.

Bentil argued that the President’s decision to appoint a deputy IGP with a specific task was a mistake, as it gives credibility to allegations from leaked audio suggesting a plot to remove Dr. Dampare for his strong stance against election rigging.

“When the NPP and the minority voted together to accept the Commission’s report in Parliament, it showed that the NPP had no issue with IGP Dampare and wasn’t trying to remove him,” Bentil said. However, he expressed concern that actions by some government operatives are undermining this commitment.

“People see what is going on, and it doesn’t help anyone,” he warned, adding that these actions could harm public perception.

“With the nation moving in a certain direction, what will change minds is talking. Dr. Bawumia is campaigning, so those operatives who think these actions will help win the election are wrong and need to stop it!”

It remains to be seen if the government will take Bentil’s advice seriously.
