Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t hold back the tears as he lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal, marking his third major international title. The 40-year-old veteran may not have been on the pitch at the final whistle—substituted in the 88th minute—but his impact was undeniable.

Ronaldo equalized for Portugal in the 61st minute, slotting in his 138th international goal, extending his own world record. It was also his eighth goal in nine Nations League matches this season, a remarkable achievement for a player plying his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

The win came in dramatic fashion as Portugal beat long-time rivals Spain on penalties, denying them a third consecutive international title after their Nations League 2023 and Euro 2024 triumphs.

Mendes Shuts Down Yamal

One of Portugal’s standout performers was Nuno Mendes, who not only neutralized Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal but also scored a crucial equalizer in the first half. The PSG left-back was named Man of the Match, and UEFA lauded his all-round brilliance.

Mendes had more touches in the opposition box than any other Portugal player, won seven duels and five tackles, and completed four successful dribbles—more than any of his teammates. His defensive mastery and attacking threat made him Yamal’s clear “nemesis.”

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague summed it up: “Lamine Yamal, in Nuno Mendes, has found his nemesis.”

Ronaldo vs. Yamal: Experience Triumphs Over Youth

Much of the pre-match hype focused on the generational battle between 40-year-old Ronaldo and 17-year-old Yamal. But Ronaldo dismissed the idea, saying it was about teams, not individuals.

Still, it was Ronaldo who left the bigger mark, scoring what turned out to be his 938th career goal, and even tracking back to dispossess Yamal at one point. Yamal, who had starred in Spain’s semi-final win over France, was largely anonymous against a well-drilled Portugal side.

“People have written him off time and again,” said ITV’s Andros Townsend. “But Ronaldo has once again proven he still belongs at the top.”

Martinez’s Job Saved?

The win could not have come at a better time for Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, who was under pressure despite a strong run with the team. Rumours suggested the new Portuguese FA president was eyeing replacements such as Jorge Jesus or José Mourinho.

But having now delivered silverware—his first major international title—Martinez appears to have bought himself time. He took over in January 2023 and is under contract through the 2026 World Cup.

“He made Ronaldo a regular scorer again,” Balague noted. “His record under Martinez is even better than before. This win kills any short-term plans to remove him.”

A Trophy That Matters

While the Nations League may not carry the same prestige as the World Cup or Euros, it is one of the few official trophies available to European teams. For Ronaldo and Martinez, it means validation. For players like Mendes, Joao Neves, and Vitinha—who also won the Champions League with PSG at the same venue—it’s a sign that a new generation is rising.

Karen Carney put it best: “Martinez has brought something special to this team. The players are responding, and Ronaldo believes in him. He should be judged at the World Cup—replacing him now would be a mistake.”

As Portugal celebrates and Ronaldo defies time yet again, one thing is clear: the Nations League may not just have brought another trophy to Lisbon—it may have changed the future of Portuguese football.
